Century Oaks Golf Club

Century Oaks Golf Club is a nine hole public golf course located in "the Thumb" of Michigan just 1/2
mile east of Elkton.

The course features bentgrass putting greens and bluegrass tees and fairways. Designed in 1973 by
James Matteson, the course has under gone extensive renovation in the past three years by golf
course architect Thomas Matteson, Jim's son. Playing at 2950 yards the Par 35 course is not
excessively long, however with a river, two creeks, and twenty five acres of mature forest it offers up an enjoyable challenge for all levels of players. The recent addition of automated irrigation has greatly enhanced the quality of the turf and the playing conditions are exceptional throughout the season. The renovation project has added 22 sand bunkers, 2 new putting greens, 2 lakes, hundreds of trees, and much more.

The clubhouse offers a luxurious red oak interior with a fully stocked bar and seating for up to 80.
Other amenities include a pro shop stocked with clothing, golf clubs, bags, and many other products. A large screen TV, satellite dish, and built in sound system make for a great place to relax. Also there is club storage for members, and a full size driving range open to the public.

2000 club newsletter

Dear friends,
Each year we look forward to bringing you this newsletter and letting you know what we
have been doing and what's in the works for next season. Some of you receiving this newsletter are past members but haven't joined lately so we thought you might like to hear about what you have been missing. The last two years have been so packed full of activity that at first we didn't know where to start. It has long been a dream of ours to have the time and resources to concentrate on renovating Century Oaks. We have had a great time with all the different projects during the past two years. Our goal is to provide you with an excellent golf facility at affordable prices. Here is a list of the major projects that we have been able to finish so far.

An automatically controlled irrigation system covering greens, tees, and fairways.
New lakes on 1 and 4
New greens on 1, 8, and an enlarged green on 7
22 new sand bunkers
Plantation of over one thousand trees and shrubs of various types.
Addition of over $100,000 worth of new maintenance equipment.
Parking lot and cart path paving
Completion of a new 2800sq.ft. Clubhouse and pub.

Another thing that really encourages us is that last year we gained over twenty new
members while retaining almost all of you from before. It makes us feel were on the right track.
We think Century Oaks is on it's way to becoming a very special place. We want to express our
gratitude and thanks to the members, and our many other friends who have supported our efforts.
We are fortunate to have so many strong supporters. We really appreciate your understanding
during the many renovation projects on the course. Your patience and support have been a major
factor in helping to successfully bring the these ideas to reality. We would like to take a moment
now and salute a few of our supporters.

A Special Thank You goes out to:

Doug and Pat Lee for the beautiful painting gracing the south wall of the clubhouse and the wonderful plants which seem to love their new home.
Arnie and Dee Dee Russell for the park bench and chair set and the 19th hole plaque.
Century Oaks Ladies League Members for the south window flower arrangements.
Tuesday Men’s League, Bob and Donna Fritz, Roger and Pat Ewald for donating the funds for the Barney Tamblyn Memorial.
Phil Mcbride and Tower Automotive for providing affordable fill dirt for the new green complex on # 8
Jim and Evelyn Matteson and Thumb National Bank of Pigeon our biggest backers.
The sponsors of our major tournament events:
Kelly Blanchard - NAPA Elkton Auto Parts
Roy Deneen - PB Classic
Elkton Firemen - The Robert Dubey Memorial
Ray Maurer - Thumb Office Supply
These people (along with many more behind the scenes) work very hard to provide us with quality outings and we appreciate all their hard work and support. We look forward to next year!

A few more acknowledgments. Thanks go out to:

Todd Remsing for running the handicap system.
Jim and Lee Hunrath for making the beautiful scoreboard for the grand opening party which we reused for the PB Classic.
Doug Lee and Kay Rogers for their tireless work on the PB Classic.
Bill Wosniak for keeping the course neat and tidy and managing the driving range.
Chris Duffey for the excellent food we enjoyed at many outings.
Around the Clubhouse:
The flowers were grown and planted by the Laker FFA under the supervision of Don Wheeler.
The shrubs and trees came from Lee’s Landscaping in Bay Port.
Bad Axe Marble and Granite did the excellent engraving work on the Century Oaks and Barney’s Memorial stones.
Thank you to Leanne Chubbs and Tracy Champange for keeping everything running smoothly inside the Clubhouse.

Congratulations 1999 Club Champions!!

Women's Champion    Rose Farver

Men's Champion    Alfredo Santos Jr.

We held the championship competition in late July this year and had a very good turnout.
The weather cooperated and everyone seemed to have a good time. Next season we really would
like to see more participation. It is a great time to interact and meet other members. Along with
custom trophies and fleece logo jackets, one of the perks of winning the 1999 competition was that the Men's and Women's champions get their own private parking spots for the whole following
year.

Maintenance:
Jeff Rosenthal did another fine job of keeping the golf course in good condition all season. Steve
Bannick made sure all the equipment was in good running order, Josh Rosenthal and Braden
Beachy also worked hard to keep things neat and trim. This year, as in each of the past three, we
have added more new maintenance equipment. The two newest additions, a new greens mower and rough mower are the most notable and should help to round out our maintenance fleet. We are continuing to reinvest in our course to try and provide consistently good playing conditions.

On the course: The woods along the right side of #3 have been cleaned up to help make it
easier to find balls along the edge. Troublesome wet spots in #5 and #9 fairways have had drainage
installed. Over 100 tons of additional gravel have been added to the member's cart parking area,
which should solve the problem we had with standing water.

Special note:
Many of you may have noticed that we have planted a hedge row privet on the north edge of the
parking lot. The reason for this is to screen the golf course from parking lot and road noises and to
make the cart parking area less conspicuous. Under good conditions it takes many years growth to
properly establish a healthy hedge. Please, do not, I repeat, do not walk through the hedge row. It breaks the branches and inhibits it's growth. An additional bag drop area will be added at the front walkway to make a convenient place to put your clubs when you first arrive. Everyone's
cooperation on this matter will be much appreciated.

2. Future Renovations:

The renovations of the Par 3, 2nd hole are still planned, however there is some debate going on
as to how it should proceed. Some strongly stated opinions held that my original design or
Plan 1, albeit very dramatic, might prove to be too difficult. Having two water holes in
succession could be overwhelming to the player. Although I don't totally share this opinion, I
have acquiesced and put forth an alternate plan. Plan 2 suggests employing the existing green,
but adding more putting surface and fortifying it with bunkers and mounds. Either way a lake
will be dug to provide fill dirt to complete the mounding and bunkering on holes 2 and 3, but in
Plan 2 it will be situated in a way as to avoid coming into play. I will post the drawings in the
clubhouse for everyone to get a good look at before we proceed.
Hole 3 will receive some more mounding and maybe a couple of bunkers.
Though we didn't have to close the course because of overly wet conditions, one thing you will
be seeing is more drainage work around the course. As we continue to irrigate and fertilize, the
turf becomes thicker and water from rain stays on the surface longer. This work should not
bother play as we will try to schedule it for slow times.
More paved cart paths around the course are planned over the next few years.

3. New for 2000
We've added two new membership products for the 2000 season.

A. - The Corporate Membership allows businesses to purchase a membership to entertain clients
or staff members at the club. Just call in advance for tee times and we will take good care of your
customers. You will be allowed 50 eighteen hole guest rounds per year. Cart rentals are included.
An account may be set up if desired to handle guest charges. These charges will be billed to a
credit card of your choice for accurate expense account records. A great way to close the deal,
reward a good customer or staff member while enjoying a substantial discount over the regular
fees.

B. - The Golf Cart Membership is also new for 2000. Available in an individual or family plan,
you can use of a golf cart for the season at one low price.
Restrictions are:
- Advance Tee times will be required to guaranty availability.
- Must be 16 years old to drive cart.
- Tournaments and Special Outings not included
- Maximum of two (2) carts out at one time

Club policy change: The $5.00 fee for riding on a members cart has been dropped. However
there still will be no loaning of carts. Again your cooperation is much appreciated.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the spring!
